I recently got the chance to try out OpenAI o1-preview and o1-mini, and I have a few thoughts to share based on my hands-on experience.

Deeper Problem-Solving Skills

What stood out to me about o1-preview is how well it handles complex technical problems — whether it’s coding, complex ETL processes, or even architecture. It’s slower than other models, but it compensates with accuracy. You can tell the model is “thinking” through each problem, which makes me feel more confident in the output. When I tested recursive coding, for example, it broke down each step systematically, which helped a lot with debugging.

On the flip side, ChatGPT-4.0 can solve similar problems, but I’ve noticed it doesn’t always reach the same level of depth or accuracy, especially for more technical stuff. Claude AI, from my experience, doesn’t quite compete here; it’s better at conversational reasoning and understanding context.

Speed Observations

I have to say, the o1-preview is slower than other models, especially when tackling complicated tasks. But for me, the trade-off is worth it — better accuracy for a bit more waiting time. For those times when speed was more important than complexity, o1-mini was much quicker, especially for simpler coding tasks. In comparison, ChatGPT-4.0 is faster overall, especially when you’re just chatting or generating less complex content. I found Claude AI was generally quicker for conversations, especially when you’re dealing with ethical or contextual queries.

Task Specialization: A Big Difference

If you’re working on coding projects, architecture diagrams, or anything with a lot of steps and logic, o1-preview is a clear winner. It’s like having a dedicated technical assistant that understands the details. However, for broader tasks — like writing blog posts or generating content — I found ChatGPT-4.0 to be more versatile. It’s a real jack-of-all-trades but lacks that specialization for deep technical work.

With Claude AI, I noticed its strength lies in contextual conversations. If I’m talking about a moral issue or trying to reason through a scenario, Claude feels like a good conversationalist, but it doesn’t dive into code or math problems like o1-preview.

Efficiency and Hardware

From a developer’s perspective, I noticed that the o1-mini runs smoother on older hardware. If you’re using it for basic coding questions or less intensive tasks, it’s my go-to because it doesn’t demand as much computational power. It runs more efficiently than ChatGPT-4.0 and Claude AI on less powerful devices, which could be important if you’re working on the go or with limited resources.

User Experience

In terms of overall user experience, o1-preview is best suited for technical environments. If I’m working on a coding project or trying to solve a complex problem, it just fits the bill. There’s a slight delay, almost like the model is pausing to think about what you’ve asked, but it gives a really solid, thought-out answer afterwards. For me, this is useful in professional settings where accuracy is more important than speed.

When I just want to chat or generate creative content, I turn to ChatGPT-4.0. It’s faster, more user-friendly, and handles a wide range of tasks well. For ethical conversations or discussions where context is key, Claude stands out. I’ve tested it with some difficult ethical questions, and it handles them with thoughtfulness, which I appreciate.

Conclusion: Choosing the Right Model for Your Needs

Here’s my takeaway after using o1-preview, ChatGPT-4.0, and Claude AI:

  • If you need technical depth for coding, math, or complex reasoning, o1-preview is the best option, even though it’s a bit slower.
  • For general purposes, where speed and versatility matter more, ChatGPT-4.0 is your best bet.
  • If your focus is on conversations, ethics, and context, I noticed that Claude AI offers the most thoughtful responses, though it’s less specialized for technical tasks.

I resigned from the Claude AI subscription after using the o1-preview. At first, I thought Claude AI could handle more complex technical tasks, at least at the same level as OpenAI’s model, but it can’t.

I’m excited to use o1-preview more as it’s shaping up to be a game-changer in technical problem-solving. I had a limited number of prompts to test, but from what I’ve seen, it‘s potential in AI.
